Black History Month

(Depending on where you live) in February is brutal. What to do? Stay in for a change and watch movies! Or … boot up your computer or grab your iPhone and start watching The Documentary Channel online when it celebrates Black History Month every Wednesday in February by telecasting rarely seen documentaries related to African American history.  In addition to its regular network telecasts during Black History Month, DOC will make the films available in their entirety through live streaming on the network’s YouTube Channel, providing unprecedented access to network programming through multiple platforms for the first time in DOC’s three-year history.

No Amy Ruth’s Brooklyn

Downtown Brooklynites may be disappointed to hear that Amy Ruth’s, the popular Harlem eatery known for its fried chicken and comfort dishes, will not be opening its second location on Fulton Street after all.

In October, 2007, Crain’s reported that Amy Ruth’s owners had signed a lease for the space formerly occupied by Gage & Tollner restaurant, which closed in 2004. But a Stop Work Notice has been tacked to the building for several months. Virgil Wade, general manager of 11-year-old Amy Ruth’s, explained that a number of obstacles have prevented the restaurant from opening in Brooklyn, though he would not elaborate.

Zina Mingo has lived in Harlem for all her 40 years and now teaches in a Harlem public school. But committed as she is to the community, she wasn’t willing to subject her son, Devon, now 8, to the educational system she works for. “Most of the schools in Harlem are failing schools, and that’s just not an option to me,” she says.

Giants Win Super Bowl Rings Back

Authorities say they have found 27 New York Giants Super Bowl rings, valued at more than $170,000, stolen last June from a Massachusetts jewelry manufacturer.

The Essex District Attorney’s office said investigators found the rings Tuesday in a bank safe deposit box in Saugus. Prosecutors said 22-year-old Kristen Sullivan, who allegedly rented the box, was being held on a charge of receiving stolen property and would be arraigned Wednesday.

To kick off its 75th anniversary season, the Apollo Theatre is offering specially priced tickets to its inaugural Amateur Night program on January 28: the first 750 tickets will be available at $7.50. The night’s program will also feature surprise visits from Apollo alumni and a big birthday cake. For subsequent Amateur Night dates, the first 75 tickets will sell for $7.50 for the remainder of the season.
