Obama’s Harlem Style

Politics

By Mike Krumboltz from yahoo.com/Buzz

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama D-Ill., speaks about race during a news conference in Philadelphia, Tuesday, March 18, 2008.After an uncharacteristic gaffe on ‘The Tonight Show’ and an unfortunate case of the giggles on ’60 Minutes,’ President Obama had a lot riding on his Tuesday night press conference. The president largely stayed on message, using the hour to focus on the economy, the budget, and his anger (even if was delayed) at those darn AIG bonuses. Continue reading

gospelspanApollo Theater, make some noise in this room,” Byron Cage commanded midway through his performance in “A Celebration of the Spiritual and Gospel Music” on Sunday afternoon. Big Deal

By JOSH BARBANEL forthe NYTimes

academicMany buyers say that jumbo mortgages are hard to come by these days. But don’t tell that to Edward R. Morrison, a law professor and economist at Columbia University, who is something of an expert on these troubled times.

Last month Mr. Morrison and his wife, Anne, bought a restored two-family town house at 357 West 121 Street in Harlem for $2.575 million. Brokers said it was a record price for a town house in the neighborhood — just down the hill from the Columbia campus in Morningside Heights, near Morningside Park — and one of the top 10 town house sales in Harlem in recent years. Harlem’s Ollie’s, Tomo Pay $2.3M!

Business

By Betsy Morais for the Columbia Spectator

Disputes over labor practices at local restaurants, such as Ollie’s and the now-closed Tomo, came to a halt on Wednesday when the New York State Department of Labor called out owner Tsu Yue Wang on his unfair treatment of employees. Wang agreed to pay a grand total of $2.3 million to the over 800 workers he wronged.

Wang’s millions mark the greatest sum ever collected for a single case in the State Labor Department’s history. The money will compensate workers for minimum wage and overtime underpayments. State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced at a press conference that a Department investigation uncovered Wang’s labor swindle at his eight Ollie’s locations—including the local 116th and Broadway restaurant—and Tomo, now boarded up at 110th and Broadway. Harlem Marketers Look Closer

Media

From DMNews.com

President Obama is making his mark with large spending bills and a unique approach to leadership, but he’s also creating subtler effects in the world of marketing by bringing African-Americans into the spotlight as a consumer segment. Lexus, for example, has started targeting black women with ads for its luxury hybrids, and Amtrak recently launched an Acela Express campaign aimed at blacks and Latinos.

“Since the election of President Obama, there is more curiosity about the African American consumer and their behavior on behalf of marketers,” says Esther Franklin, EVP, director of cultural identities for Starcom MediaVest Group (SMG)’s multicultural unit, SMG Multicultural.

“The whole Obama phenomenon should make it easier for marketers to embrace multicultural and diversity in advertising,” adds Sonya Grier, associate professor of marketing at American University.  Continue reading
