The Old/New Harlem House Party

Politics

All Things Harlem was at a Harlem House protest party a few weeks ago and spoke to with Ben Becker an organizer from the Answer Coalition regarding the Palestinian / Israeli conflict. Mr. Becker is passionate as he paints a real world picture through the eyes of his own experiences…

… President Obama is approaching the conflict by facilitating the dialogue between the two parties (which is probably the safest and smartest position to take).

Harlem Rep Rangel’s Patience Taxed!

Politics

By Andy Geller from NY Post

rangelphoto2The normally unflappable Charles Rangel blew his stack on TV yesterday, insisting that accusations about his ethics have “no merit” and “no facts.”

The Harlem Democrat was asked on “Fox News Sunday” how he can have tax problems and serve as the chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

“Nobody has ever accused me, except [the media], of wrongdoing,” retorted Rangel. “Just because [the media] . . . has a problem with me doesn’t mean the Congress has a problem.”

The House Ethics Committee has been probing why Rangel failed to pay taxes on at least $75,000 rental income from a Dominican Republic villa.

Crystal Black Davis launched Savvy in the fall of 1998 as an entity to host fundraising events and provide marketing support for the charitable causes she was involved with. The more people saw her work, the more they requested her services. In 2006, Crystal decided to focus her attention exclusively on the gourmet and specialty food industry. Savvy began to grow its niche organically, developing into what it is today, a food marketing firm with a solid reputation for creating awareness and driving demand for gourmet brands.

A Harlem Art Paint Party

Arts

By Ernest-Barteldes From NYPress.com

tallerLocated near the Museo del Barrio in Spanish Harlem, the Taller Boricua Gallery at the Julia de Burgos Center has, since its inception in 1970, done a great service to its community by encouraging and promoting the arts in an area that is far removed from the Chelsea/Williamsburg/Downtown Manhattan gallery scene.

Though it mostly champions Latino artists (I discovered it almost by accident a few years ago during the first edition of the citywide Viva Mexico festival), it has also promoted the works of various talented individuals whose work does not usually appear in other spaces around town—many of them make political statements on racial inequality, sex and sometimes even political protest . For instance, last summer the curators hosted a retrospective of the works of Puerto Rican painter Pablo Marcano Garcia, who in the 1970s spent seven years in Federal Prison for acts committed during a protest against the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile.
