Funeral Planned For Slain NYPD Officer

Yesterday, about 250 people marched in Harlem during a rally for Omar Edwards, the off-duty police officer who was fatally shot in Harlem by a fellow cop. Edwards, who was black, had been pursuing a man suspected of breaking into his car with his gun drawn; his shooter, police officer Andrew Dunton, was white. According to the Reverend Al Sharpton said, “We’re not here to play the race card. We’re trying to stop the card from being played on black law enforcement.”

At Congressional Black Caucus Educational Briefing in DC

On Thursday, May 21, Angela Glover Blackwell, Founder & CEO of PolicyLink, a national research and action institute advancing economic and social equity, joined distinguished members from the Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ); leading educational and policy experts; and lawmakers in Washington, DC for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s  “Promise Neighborhoods: Opportunities, Challenges and Policy Recommendation”.

The educational briefing addressed President Barack Obama’s FY2010 budget request, which allocated funds to support the development of 20 promise Neighborhoods modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone to “improve academic achievement and life outcomes in high-poverty areas.”

Biography

Frankie Manning (May 26, 1914 – April 27, 2009) was an American dancer, instructor and choreographer. Manning is considered one of the founding fathers of the Lindy Hop. was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He frequented Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom in the 1930s, eventually becoming a dancer in the elite and prestigious “Cat’s Corner,” a corner of the dance floor in which impromptu exhibitions and competitions took place. During a dance contest in 1935, Manning and his partner Frieda Washington performed the first air step (often referred to as an aerial) in a swing dance competition against George “Shorty” Snowden and his partner Big Bea, at the Savoy Ballroom. The air step he performed was a “back to back roll” and was danced while Chick Webb played “Down South Camp Meeting”, which was Manning’s request after having heard the song earlier in the evening. The airstep went flawlessly to the music and astonished over 2,000 audience members watching.

Exclusive: Cop On Cop Crime In Harlem?

Investigators on Friday were trying to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting of an off-duty New York City police officer by a fellow officer who mistook him for an armed criminal on a dark and mist-shrouded street in East Harlem late Thursday night.

omar_cop1The slain plain clothes officer, Omar J. Edwards, 25, of Brooklyn, who was assigned to patrol housing projects, was shot in the arm and chest after a team of three other plainclothes officers in a car saw him chasing a man on East 125th Street between First and Second Avenues with his gun drawn, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said.

Sources identified the officer who fired the shots as Andrew Dunton, a four-year veteran of the force from Long Island.
