Sons and Strivers Swept Up in Harlem Crime

Crime

strivers

One September day last year, a 20-year-old man from East Harlem hoping to get a job with the city sat down at a computer in a building near City Hall and took civil service exam No. 8309.

The man, Bernard Witherspoon, had graduated two months earlier from Borough of Manhattan Community College with an associate’s degree in liberal arts. He had been working part time at a Bed Bath & Beyond store, but he decided to take the exam because it was the first step to becoming a New York City correction officer. His aunt worked as a correction officer, and so did several relatives of his best friend, Raylin Footmon.

Not Glenn Beck’s America?

Politics

TV Beck's AdvertisersGlenn Beck returns to Fox News Channel on Monday after a vacation with fewer companies willing to advertise on his show than when he left, part of the fallout from calling President Barack Obama a racist.

A total of 33 Fox advertisers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials not air on Beck’s show, according to the companies and ColorofChange.org, a group that promotes political action among blacks and launched a campaign to get advertisers to abandon him. That’s more than a dozen more than were identified a week ago. Continue reading

Comptroller Candidates TV Debate

Politics

The four Democratic candidates vying for City Comptroller Bill Thompson’s job have faced off in their first official TV debate, sponsored by the city’s Campaign Finance Board.

For most of the hour, it was public policy ho-hum. The Democratic field that consists of three current City Council members from Queens — John Liu, David Weprin, Melinda Katz — and one from Brooklyn — David Yassky — each worked to define themselves on their own terms.

In the heart of Harlem, at a modest design studio geared towards youth and young adults, young fashionista’s are brewing. Typically, when one considers the term fashion designer, names of established individuals come to mind, from the likes of Alexander McQueen to Jean Paul Gaultier, but a small group of young hopefuls intend to turn the tables.

A select few individuals were granted the opportunity to partake in an action-packed time of Summer Fashion Boot Camp at Harlem Textile Works’ founded by Margaret Troupe throughout the summer. Youth nearing their teenage years created garments with expertise, spanning beyond their years. “Many of these kids have produced apparel rivaling those at Fashion Institute and Technology “, stated Leslie Wasserberger, a teacher at this creative program. Several of our featured contributors have felt the heat, heard the warning bells, and are offering some sound advice on what to do:

Race is not Gov. Paterson’s Problem!

Politics

paterson2Harlem native Errol Louis reports on Gov. Paterson’s low poll ratings.

Gov. Paterson has every right to be upset at the way former allies have turned against him. But race has little to do with his political woes.

For months now, there’s been a whisper campaign that Paterson might not stand for election next year. Democrats are concerned that Paterson’s low poll numbers could drag down the whole ticket in 2010.

Both U.S. Senate seats and the thin Democratic majority in the state Senate are at stake next year.

In a worst-case scenario, Republicans could take back the governor’s mansion and recapture control of the state Senate, which will redraw all political districts in 2011. Continue reading
