Mattel Launches Black Dolls Line

SoInStylePicToy company Mattel announced their new line of African-American dolls yesterday. The So In Style line will feature  more authentic facial-features such as fuller lips, wider nose, higher cheek bones and curlier hair. Barbie designer Stacey McBride- Irby developed the new line of black dolls.  Being an African American and mother of two, McBride-Irby wanted to develop a line  of dolls which reflected her daughters and community.  The line will also feature three dolls Kara, Trichelle and Grace, all  varying in skin tones.  Each doll will be accompanied by  a “little sister” to show mentorship between the dolls.

Like regular, seasonal flu, H1N1 influenza is caused by a virus that infects the nose, throat and lungs. It causes fever and a cough or sore throat that can last a week or more. It can also cause headaches, body aches, chills and tiredness. Some people also get diarrhea and vomiting.

Shmuley Boteach, Jackson’s onetime spiritual adviser, has just released The Michael Jackson Tapes. Nicole LaPorte talks to the media-savvy rabbi about life with Jacko.

“It’s not like there’s a precedent for this!” Rabbi Shmuley Boteach said the other day, referring to his oxymoronic role as a traditional-values-preaching man of the cloth who also happens to be a sophisticated media maven.

Boteach, after all, Twitters, blogs, records daily podcasts, and, of course, has his own Facebook page and Web site, where he pawns his wares: books, Bobble-heads in his bearded and bespectacled likeness, and “I’m a Rabbi Shmuley Groupie!” T-shirts.

Maysles Cinema Schedule 2009

Friends of the Maysles Cinema,

This week at the Maysles Cinema we get back to work with an all-star line up. Tonight at 7:30pm we show Soul Power, on the Zaire 74 music festival that accompanied the “Rumble in the Jungle” heavyweight boxing championship match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Performers include James Brown, Celia Cruz and the Fania All-Stars, B.B. King, Miriam Makeba, and the Spinners.

Following the screening there will be a rare conversation with Soul Power camera operators Al Maysles and Kevin Keating. On Thursday, October 1st at 7:30 you can catch another screening of Soul Power followed by a panel discussion. This kicks off our month long festival “Congo in Harlem” along with a screening of Raoul Peck’s Lumumba on Friday, October 2nd at 7:30pm.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been endorsed by the Harlem’s Reverend Calvin Butts; pastor of the First Baptist Church of East Elmhurst, Reverend Patrick Henry Young; architect Maya Lin, who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., and Russian-language weekly newspaper Vecherniy New York.

Former candidate City Councilmember Melinda Katz, weekly newspapers The Jewish Sentinel and The Jewish Press, and the 45,000-member strong Retail Wholesale and Department Store union have endorsed Bill de Blasio for Public Advocate.
