Harlem supper Club stirs the pot

Business

creoleHe’s hardly a magician, but Kevin Walters has pulled off a noteworthy sleight of hand: Growing revenues for his East Harlem-based restaurant and jazz club when many dining and nightlife establishments in the city are struggling.

He’s done it through a savvy word-of-mouth marketing campaign that’s attracted artists, tourists and jazz lovers from all over the world to dine on the restaurant’s gumbo and hear such musicians as trombonist Clifton Anderson and drummer Grady Tate.

Mr. Walters never expected to be running his own restaurant. A former investment banker and small-business adviser, he was the majority investor in Creole Restaurant and Music Supper Club when, shortly before its 2004 opening, the chef and general manager had to quit after becoming too ill to carry on. Mr. Walters decided the only course of action was to step in and run operations himself. “Before I knew it, this was taking up 100% of my time,” he says.

Roy DeCarava Dies

Art

Roy DeCarava, the child of a single mother in Harlem who turned that neighborhood into his canvas, becoming one of the most important photographers of his generation by chronicling the lives of its ordinary people and its jazz giants, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. He was 89 and lived in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

His death was announced by Sherry Turner DeCarava, his wife and an art historian who has written about his work.

Mr. DeCarava trained to be a painter, but while using a camera to gather images for his printmaking work he began to gravitate toward photography, partly because of its immediacy but also because of the limitations he saw all around him for a black artist in a segregated nation. “A black painter, to be an artist,” he once said, “had to join the white world or not function — had to accept the values of white culture.”

The First Lady on Dating and Glamour

Fashion

first_lady

Wow, the Michelle Obama appears on the cover of the December issue of Glamour. She’s the first First Lady to do so. Editor Cindi Leive writes that the magazine put her on the cover not because she’s a style icon, but because she’s passionate about children and mentoring and empowering young women. Michelle poses inside the magazine with seven White House interns, holding hands with the two luckiest ones. Leive can’t help but gush about how fabulous going to the White House to shoot the First Lady was.

It probably goes without saying that visiting the White House to photograph the First Lady rocks, but come on: visiting the White House to photograph the First Lady rocks … [O]ur team photographed her in the magnificent Diplomatic Room, and to see her striding confidently through those halls, joking with the crew about First Dog Bo’s upcoming birthday and warmly greeting every one of her group of interns, was a thrill.

Dr. West Speaks to Harlem @ Hue-Man

Leaving Hue-Man Bookstore on Wednesday, October 14th was almost an impossibility for Dr. Cornell West. Because  of his generous nature, his eloquence and profound exuberance everyone wanted just a little more of his attention.

As I walked into Hue-Man bookstore lights were on, camera was rolling and there was Ed Gordon  sitting across from Cornell West in what seemed like a deep discussion.  All the people there were to one side as not  to be in the shot of the camera. Continue reading

Dusty, Needs a New Home

P1000499

Hi everyone,

A good friend has developed a rare and severe type of brain infection and can no longer take care of her 1-yr-old cat, Dusty!

I’m asking you all to please spread the word that Dusty, adorable, spunky (fixed) and full of life, needs a new home. She’s got all her shots, is in perfect health, and is a funny, inquisitive little cat. She likes to crawl underneath bed covers, stare deeply into the kitchen sink if there’s water running, explore bathtubs and watch people brush their teeth.

She’s super smart and loves to play. We’ve been fostering her for several months now, in the hope my friend could regain enough health to reclaim her. But now it’s time to find her a new, loving and permanent home. She’s awesome — you or anyone you know who loves cats would be so happy to have her in your home.

Please spread this far and wide to anyone you know!

Thanks,
