H&M Art Gallery of Harlem & Harlem Arts Alliance in association with VOZA RIVERS, have planned a first exhibition of its kind to give the opportunity to the members of the Harlem Arts Alliance to exibit or perform their art.

7 Days X 7 Artist + 7 Performers

This exhibition is for 7 days, to include 7 visual Artists (1 day each) and 7 musical performances or performing artist per day (1 hour each)

Homemade: The 2009 Juried Faculty and Staff Art Exhibition

The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) and its Visual Arts Department graciously invites the New York City community to experience the work of HSA’s faculty and staff through its first ever juried faculty and staff exhibition. Homemade begins with an Opening Reception, Thursday, December 3rd from 6pm to 8pm in The G-Space at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue near West 141st Street.  The exhibition highlights the work of HSA’s teaching artists and those behind the scenes.  The jury will present Merit and Recognition awards during the opening reception.  The exhibition runs from December 3rd through January 12th.  Please note HSA will be closed from Wednesday, December 23rd through Monday, January 4th.

Event:  “A Community of Dance - Celebrating African Dance in Harlem”

Les Enfants du Soleil African Dance Theater is celebrating African dance in Harlem this December with a 2-hour community African dance class and a full-length dance concert at the Kennedy Center on Saturday, December 5, 2009

Community African Dance Class – 4:00-6:00pm
This 2-hour class will feature a medley of dances and taught by the master artists of Les Enfants du Soleil!

African Dance Concert – 8:00pm
Watch Les Enfants du Soleil African Dance Theater and Special Guests – the children of Crystal Harrison’s Asaba N’goma Dance Theater – light up the stage as they portray ancient stories embedded in West African culture!

Billie Holiday Theatre: What Would Jesus Do?

The Obie and AUDELCO award winning Billie Holiday Theatre

is pleased to present the New York premiere of What Would Jesus Do?, an inter-faith, intergenerational play with music about family, church, sex and HIV, written and directed by HAA member Yvette Heyliger.  The show’s run is scheduled through December 20th

Performances are Thursdays & Fridays at 8pm; Saturdays at 3pm & 8pm; and Sundays at 4:00pm.  The Billie Holiday Theatre is located at 1368 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY (take the “A” train to Nostrand Ave.)

CELEBRATES KWANZAA WITH AN ALL-DAY FESTIVAL

Event highlighted by performances of song, dance, spoken word and a marketplace

WHAT            Kwanzaa Spirits 2009!

A vibrant cultural festival of African and African-American music, dance and crafts that commemorates the seven principles of Kwanzaa at the American Museum of Natural History.  Kwanzaa Spirits 2009! is a feast for the soul and senses.Celebration highlights include performances by:

·        International Steel Drum Orchestra (ADLIB), showcasing a variety of styles including calypso, sosa, and jazz
·        Restoration Dance Theatre Company under the artistic direction of Karen Thornton-Daniels
·        Award-winning Vy Higginsen’s Gospel for Teens Choir
·        The electrifying Balance Dance Theatre under the artistic direction of Obediah Wright

The bustling Kwanzaa Marketplace, located in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, will feature vendors, visual artists, and craftspeople as well as representatives from major cultural institutions.In addition, special Kwanzaa foods will be available in the Museum Food Court. This event is co-produced by Community Works and the New Heritage Theatre Group under the artistic direction of James Stovall. The Marketplace is organized by the Harlem Arts Alliance.
