Target Corp. is at it again in New York City. The retailer, which has opened up pop-up stores for weekends in the Big Apple, just turned its already fervent courtship of the city up a notch. Target spent $250,000 to wrap an entire full-length Manhattan subway train. Continue reading

Diddy Top Harlemite on Forbes 2010 Celebrity Power Lists

Forbes has released its annual Celebrity 100 and it seems black women are back in full force. This year’s list was topped by two of our favorites. They are powerful black women known the world over by one name (and sometimes even by one letter) – O and Bey, Oprah and Beyoncé. Forbes had one Harlemite on the list and that was Diddy who ranked #68.

Emancipation Proclamation Leaves Obama’s Office

A rare copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by President Abraham Lincoln, arrived in the Oval Office for Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January and has been hanging out just above a bronze bust of King ever since. Continue reading

NYC Council Passes Budget

The New York City Council has passed a budget for the coming fiscal year, which begins Thursday, July 1.

Lawmakers approved the $63 billion budget Tuesday evening. It includes about $1 billion in cuts, including slashes to jobs and services. The spending plan does some jobs and fire companies that had been on the chopping block. Continue reading

Gov. Paterson Continues Vetoes

News

A day after New York Gov. David Paterson began using his line-item veto on certain additions to the state budget, he defended his actions and vented frustration at lawmakers.

“I’m done talking to legislative leaders,” Paterson told The Associated Press. “I am not going to operate in this process any more. I am doing the vetoes. As far as I am concerned, this budget process is over.” Continue reading

300 aim to be Harlem ‘Promise Neighborhoods’

More than 300 communities around the U.S. have submitted applications to the Department of Education to receive grants under a federal program designed to revitalize troubled neighborhoods.

The “Promise Neighborhoods” program will award grants to 20 organizations and institutions of higher education to plan for a range of academic, health and career programs in distressed neighborhoods. Continue reading
