The New York State General Election is today November 2, 2010.  Both Senate seats and a gubernatorial election are up to be voted on as well as many other races. The voter registration deadline is coming right up, read below for more information.

Scorpio – Harlem Celebrity Rise To Fame

Sean Combs, was born on November 4 1969 in Harlem New York, 1969 is born under the sign of Scorpio. He is an American rapper, record producer, actor, fashion designer, dancer, singer and entrepreneur.

Life’s Challenges – Born in the Harlem housing projects, Sean was raised by his parents Janice and Melvin Combs. At a young age, Sean’s father was found shot to death in his car outside of a Manhattan park. Continue reading

GOP Chairman Steele Tries To Still Harlem

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is urging New York City voters to oust Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel.

Steele appeared at a campaign rally in Harlem on Tuesday with Rangel’s GOP opponent, Michel (MY’-kuhl) Faulkner which HW twittered about today.

Faulkner is a minister and former professional football player. Steele calls him a strong representative of the “new” Republican Party. Continue reading

Schomburg Center Gets Angelou Work In Harlem

Maya Angelou’s paper trail includes a rambling, typewritten letter from James Baldwin, dated Nov. 20, 1970, addressed to “Dear, dear Sister” discussing everything from his new book to his feelings about death.

And one from Malcolm X, written on Jan. 15, 1965, assuring her, “You can communicate because you have plenty of (soul) and you always keep your feet firmly rooted on the ground.”

And a draft of her poem “On the Pulse of Morning,” which she recited at the 1993 inauguration of President Bill Clinton, showing Ms. Angelou’s changing the first line from “Rocks and Rivers and Trees” to the final, stark version: “A Rock, A River, A Tree.” Continue reading

Harlem Rep. Charlie Rangel Without Lawyer

The scheduled Nov. 15 start of Rep. Charlie Rangel‘s ethics trial is now in jeopardy after the former Ways and Means Committee chairman no longer has a defense team.

The 80-year-old Harlem Democrat and lawyers for the Washington firm of Zuckerman Spaeder have parted ways, according to people inside and outside Congress familiar with the breakup, The Associated Press reported today. Continue reading

As the event kicks off, enjoy spooky stories with actor and storyteller Dan Kitrosser, pumpkin crafts, and a pumpkin carving demonstration with professional food carver Hugh McMahon. Walter’s World: Harlem Dance Works 2.0 Part Two (update)

An overflow crowd attended the second studio showing of Dance Theatre of Harlem 2.0 on Thursday October 21. This week an excerpt from a work in progress by Robert Garland was presented. Mr. Garland’s duet was set to four of the Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Misty Copeland (Soloist American Ballet Theatre) and Matthew Prescott performed the yet untitled duet. Garland was asked by Dance Theatre of Harlem Artistic Director Virginia Johnson to create a work classical in design. Continue reading
