Harlem Scenic Restaurant Goes Bankrupt

CrainsNY reports that Terrace in the Sky, the French Mediterranean restaurant located atop Butler Hall at 400 W. 119th St., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday. The company that operates the restaurant, Morningside Heights Restaurant Corp., was forced to file for bankruptcy due to significant federal and state tax arrears. According to the bankruptcy filing, it owes $50,000 to the IRS and $100,000 to the New York State Department of Tax and Finance.

Another large creditor is its landlord, Columbia University. The company owes the university $87,000, according to the filing. Columbia University is also suing the tenant in civil court for failure to pay use and occupancy of the space.

The restaurant will remain open for business during the reorganization.

For the last 30 years, Terrace in the Sky has been a popular place to host events like weddings and bar mitzvahs. Its terrace offers panoramic views of Manhattan. The restaurant was founded in 1975 by the late Dusan Bernic. After getting culinary training as a teenager, Bernic escaped from communist Yugoslavia to become a chef of his own restaurant. He died of cancer at 43 in 1985.

Calls to Nada Bernic, the general manager of the restaurant and the late Bernic’s widow, weren’t returned. The company’s attorney and Columbia University weren’t immediately available for comments.
